About Us

Adventure inspires us to see the world and make it better. That’s why we build gear that fuels both outdoor experiences and global change. To achieve our mission, we dedicate at least 1% of our revenue to nonprofits that help communities experiencing poverty.

Gear for Good®
Our Gear for Good® promise is to make durable gear as ethically and sustainably as possible, and to use our company as a way to support communities in need.

FIGHTING POVERTY

Reduce Inequality
We focus on empowering communities in Latin America through health care, education, and livelihood. We allocate 1% of our revenue to the Cotopaxi Foundation, which supports nonprofits, including the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and United to Beat Malaria. To ensure our giving is effective, we use double-blind studies and proven methodologies.

ETHICALLY AND SUSTAINABLY
People & Planet
As a certified carbon neutral company, we think holistically about environmental and social sustainability. Since our biggest negative impacts occur within our supply chain, we strive to work with factories that treat people right. We also choose repurposed, recycled, or responsible materials, with a goal of using “the Three Rs” in every product by 2025.

B CORP
Force for Good
As a certified B Corporation, we use the power of business for social, environmental, and economic good. When you support B Corps, you take part in a global initiative to do business in a better way.

Our Founder & CEO
Davis Smith grew up throughout Latin America, where he saw first-hand the hardship resulting from unequal access to opportunity. He has since dedicated himself to using business as a force for good in order to address the inequality he witnessed during his childhood.

MT. COTOPAXI
The Mountain
One of the world's highest active volcanoes, Cotopaxi (koh-toh-PAHK-see) in Ecuador had a major presence in Davis’s life—even his school was named for it. The mountain’s glacial streams, wild llamas, and countless trails instilled in him the spirit of adventure and gratitude that eventually inspired him to found Cotopaxi the company.

WHY LLAMAS?
Why the Llama?
These headstrong herd animals live in some of the most rugged regions of the Andes. They’re hardy, sociable, fiercely loyal, curious, and eccentric—kinda like us.
